What to Wear for Your Outdoor Family Portrait Session
Expert Tips from PJL Photography – Family Photographer in Lancaster & the South Lakes
Planning Your Family Photo Shoot – What to Wear and How to Prepare
Your outdoor family portrait session is a wonderful opportunity to capture the warmth, connection, and personality of your family in natural surroundings. One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “What should we wear?”
Here’s a complete guide to help you look and feel your best on the day.
1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Choose outfits that work well together without being identical. Aim for complementary tones across your family rather than matching colours.
Pick 2–3 main shades that suit your chosen location and the season — for example:
Soft blues, beige, and white for coastal or park sessions
Forest greens, browns, and mustard tones for autumn shoots
Pinks, navy, and grey for an elegant, timeless look
Avoid everyone wearing the same colour or identical outfits — variety adds interest and personality to your photos.
2. Dress for the Season and Setting
Lancashire and the South Lakes offer stunning backdrops — from woodland paths to open beaches — so dress appropriately for comfort and weather.
Spring/Summer: Light, breathable fabrics and soft pastel tones.
Autumn/Winter: Warm layers, cosy knits, and rich seasonal colours like burgundy, olive, and mustard.
Remember, layered outfits not only keep you comfortable but add texture and depth to your portraits.
3. Keep It Simple and Timeless
Choose clothing that won’t date quickly. Avoid bold logos, busy patterns, or neon colours.
Solid tones and subtle textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your family’s connection.
4. Add Texture and Layers
Textures such as denim, wool, linen, and lace bring life to your images. Layers like cardigans, scarves, or jackets allow for small style variations without a full outfit change.
5. Coordinate Footwear
Shoes often appear in family portraits, especially in full-length images.
Select footwear that complements your outfits and suits the location — boots for woodland walks, neutral trainers or sandals for parks or beaches.
6. Accessories That Add Personality
Accessories can complete your look — think soft scarves, subtle jewellery, or hats. Just keep them minimal so they enhance, not distract from, your portraits.
7. Comfort Is Key
When everyone feels relaxed and comfortable in what they’re wearing, your photos will look effortless and natural. Avoid clothing that’s tight, itchy, or restrictive — comfort equals confidence in front of the camera.
8. Tips for Children
Dress little ones in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing they can move in.
Bring along a favourite toy or blanket to help them feel relaxed — genuine smiles always make for the best photos!
“Philip was exceptionally calm and accommodating; adapting to his surroundings, the less than ideal weather conditions and on the spot requests and personalities of our group with ease. Nothing was too much trouble, his direction and suggestions were friendly and with good humour. Our entire family have been thrilled with the end result of fantastic images that we will treasure and a day filled with laughter and great memories”
